Short description of the track contents
The track Pharmacoepidemiology & -Economics will enable master students to acquire an understanding of the concepts and skills to practice pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance and pharmaco-economcs. Specifically, it will:
- Enable the students to understand basics of drug development and their role in (ageing) society;
- Enable the students to acquire basic knowledge of medicine and some major acute and chronic diseases with their treatment options;
- Enable students to understand issues surrounding benefit-risk profiles of patient drug use including the cause, manifestations and consequences of adverse drug effects (ADEs), the manner in which these are detected and monitored, and the related historic and legal frameworks;
- Students will acquire knowledge and skills to practice fundamental statistical and epidemiological concepts and methods, specifically in the area of drug intervention research;
- Students will acquire knowledge on important pharmacoepidemiological and pharmaco-econmomical concepts and methods and competence to apply these methods to drug issues;
- Students will be skilled to life-long learning in these areas.
Within this track, track-specific modules are developed and available that can be followed at the units of PharmacoTherapy, -Epidemiology & -Economics (PTE2) as well as the departments of Epidemiology and Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology of the UMCG. In addition, students are invited to follow courses from other laboratory oriented units as Pharmacokinetics, Toxicology & Targeting and Clinical pharmacy and Pharmacology. The required modules and major research project may be used to fulfil the requirements of a registration as a Junior Epidemiologist (A) according to the Dutch Society for Epidemiology.
The track therefore can be distinguished from other MPS tracks in the sense that it trains students to reach a nationally and internationally acknowledged level of Epidemiologist.
