Context of the track

Modern medicine is a rapidly evolving field with new challenges facing the pharmaceutical scientist and pharmacist. The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, resistance to antibiotics and an ageing population require new views on drug development, as the current treatment arsenal provides insufficient disease-modifying capacity. This requires novel and at times unconventional strategies for target-identification, drug development, and formulation. For example, more and more biologics and advanced therapy medicinal products such as cell therapies have been and will continue to be implemented. The research-oriented MSc student with an interest in pharmaceutical design and engineering needs to be familiar with the most recent developments in these areas for future career opportunities.
